Teach defending as a team

The closest defender slows the ball. A second defender offers cover behind and inside. A third balances the space away from the ball. Let players discover the shape in a small game, pause briefly to ask what they see, then play again.

Use width without making players stand still

Mark three channels for younger players or five for older players as visual guides. Encourage teammates to offer different passing angles. Treat the channels as reminders, not fixed positions. Remove them and see whether the spacing transfers to the game.

Make your first practice welcoming

Start with a small game while players arrive. Learn names, pair players thoughtfully and give each child plenty of touches. Keep explanations short. End with a question: “What was your favorite thing you tried today?”
